In addition to AD&D, Star Wars d6 was the other RPG we played a lot of when I was younger. I haven't really played it since The Phantom Menace came out aside from a fun one-shot a few years ago, though it's very possible to block out the bad SW and immerse yourself in the good SW if you try.
