“Make it new!” cried Ezra Pound, quoting an ancient Chinese story about an even more ancient emperor who had the phrase inscribed on his washbasin. Pound seems to have mistranslated some things—the Chinese may actually be better rendered as “do it again”—but he was certainly aware of the irony.
